Elite Politics in the New Era: Xi’s Centralization of Power and the CCP’s Strategy for Long-Term Survival

The rapid centralization of power under Chinese Communist Party (CCP) authority and President Xi Jinping since 2012 calls for new frameworks to understand and anticipate political developments in China. As competing interest groups are becoming the main drivers of elite politics in the “new era” of reform, the value of studying patronage network-based factions or the collective leadership model decreases, and analysis of elite politics that focuses on the emerging cleavages between the potential winners and losers of China’s reform process will prove more fruitful.
